Now Senator Murray Sinclair, previously Judge Sinclair, and chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, also a person of Indigenous heritage have been advocating for Indigenous equality; during most of his natural existence. Despite many evidence based research studies, bearing witness to Indigenous discrimination and historical traumas; the Canadian Criminal Justice System continue to face disrepute for permitting prejudicial practices.

The Canadian legislature, enact Indigenous leniency laws, that governs the justice system. However, a closer look at Indigenous incarceration rates for Indigenous youths, men and women, reveals continuous dis-proportionality compared to the non-Indigenous population. Further, social inequalities triggering mass suicide rate among men in this population; discovered during my 4th. year thesis project (Kissoon, J., 2018). Criminal justice laws such as; the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A) and the Gladue report, 718.2 (e); meant to consider the severity of Indigenous offenses along with special; social, economical, environmental, and biological history, has been neglected more often than not. Indigenous youths/persons experiencing mass overrepresentation, and prisonization in the criminal justice system, far outweighs those of non-Indigenous persons in Canada.

A tremendous concern continue to be individuals representative of the Canadian Criminal Justice System. The system, is only as good as those governing with the power, privilege and authority to execute their duty impartially without prejudice.

To this day, in the 21st., century there continue to be European colonist in positions of power who practices malicious treatment of Indigenous inhabitants (the first people to occupy Canada).

In Canada, the Indigenous population continue to experience; labeling, stigmatization and stereotyping, as a means of justifying social anomalies associated with maltreatment of this very unique culture. Rights and liberties appear insignificant to many, in times when Human Rights are meant to be at the forefront; representative of our societal values.

During my degree studies at an in-class debate, on Aboriginal overrepresentation, a Caucasian male student said, as a matter of fact leniency laws in the justice system will never support or validate Indigenous rights, this will never be a reality; based on his own knowledge and experience working in the system. This observation made in a rather obnoxious tone, my only re-thought was to adamantly support self-government for Indigenous peoples on their land in their community. The abuse of Indigenous rights is done openly without any consideration for Canadian laws, and no fear of repercussion. Such dumbfounded admission leaves one with a sense of shock, surprise, numbness, disgust and helplessness.

What’s the purpose of having a legislative process, if those we trust to practise without misinterpretations, fails to maintain the very ethical standards ingrained in the Canadian Constitution?

As a society we need individuals in service who understands the meaning of; dignity, impartiality, equality and human rights. Thus, humanity before: race, age, color, class, sex, cultural affiliation, physical or mental impediments.

This week, Senator Murray Sinclair’s, report was published drawing attention to the Thunder Bay Police Service Board. Decades, of discriminatory practices involving the police and Indigenous communities in Thunder Bay; are finally at the forefront receiving national media coverage. Thunder Bay Police Service Board will be dismantled, and re-organized within one year; to establish ethical integrity and accountability in providing lawful services to Indigenous individuals.

Thunder Bay, is only one example and ought to be an example for all other authorities, within all police jurisdictions, in Canada. The police service operates under a hierarchical system; and individuals driving frontline police officers’ conduct are fully responsible for systematic anomalies. All Police Service Boards, need to practice with integrity and accountability in decision-making.

There must also be amendments to the system of incarceration, so that frontline police officers are not expected to maintain specific periodic quotas and numbers of law infringements for personal and other rewards. Rather, it would serve society more productively for frontline police officers to maintain a level of autonomous authority in the application of leniency. Frequently, police officers come under fire, but their authority to apply leniency tend to be restricted; by superiors in positions of power. Frontline police officers may also face ridicule and forms of discipline for not abiding by departments agendas. Hence, cognitive dissonance theory where ones own belief system becomes inferior to the majority driving dissonance in the criminal justice system.

Frontline police officers, serving those in authority with power, and privilege; may experience attacks on their very livelihood, if they do not perform as expected. Our politicians must stop using Indigenous people and minorities as a food source, communities have greater chances for survival if the expectation is community socialization not prisonization. Incarceration changes humanity -- treating someone like an animal tends to bring out animalistic survival instincts; therefore defeating the purpose of rehabilitation. Hence, destroying the person’s humanity and returning them to society with less capabilities than when they entered the Criminal Justice System. Therefore, the restorative justice system is far more beneficial to society than the dominant retributive system.

Senator Murray Sinclair is paving the path to equity with a common goal for maintaining peace and good will among nations in Canada.

Indigenous communities in rural areas, more often than not, experiences food shortages due to lack off; businesses, industries, roads, and supplies of produce. Limited availability of such products causes an increase in prices; so much so that only those able to pay black-market prices may have access to nutritious produce.

U.S. Canada GM Workers!

Job Security Is Essential To Communities In North America

Elon Musk, is considering throwing his hat in the ring to support GM workers in North America!

"Elon Musk is the co-founder and CEO at Tesla, overseeing all product design, engineering and manufacturing of the company's electric vehicles, battery products, and Solar Roofs."

GM ought to encourage Elon Musk, to assume some of the responsibility towards accommodating GM workers; for the benefit of communities and stability of the North American economy.

Elon Musk, is considering a deal to buy GM North American plants; it is not absolutely clear which GM plants are being considered for the transition. It is possible for GM plants to become a phenomenal success; providing there is diversity in production. Possibly, encouraging solar battery and solar roof powered along with minimal reliability on electric use.

The concern with producing vehicles that are solely electric is the consumption of fossil fuel for energy. Most of us already know of environmental concerns regarding global warming and fossil fuel usage; not to mention fossil fuel is not in infinite energy supply (meaning there is a specific quantity and then we have no more). North American societies cannot survive without energy, hence the drive to clean renewable energy.

There is no ppoint in buying out GM if Elon Musk plans to go bankrupt; therefore making vehicles that are compatible with environmental challenges and affordable to the average North American is a better alternative..

GM ought to encourage Elon Musk, to assume some of the responsibility towards accommodating GM workers; for the benefit of communities and stability of the North American economy.

Canadian Societal Norms & Humanity: Theoretical Analysis And What Works!

 (Joy Kissoon - Artist, R.P.N., B.S.Sc.-Criminal Justice)

Walking the route of righteousness -- We can look away, but what if we are looking at our own reflection?

Canadian, and universal societal norms instruct us on procreating to protect the survival of the species. A number of philosophers agree, going further in their analysis to claim that the only purpose for sex is procreation. Likewise, there are philosophers that also support having mutually pleasing sexual relationships; regardless of procreation. Of course, in modern times people agree that sex is part of their life's accomplishments, as is procreation. At times folks identify with their choice of partners in the case of marriage! Monogamy is a fleeting promise, fast becoming a trait of the past; nevertheless people frequently sign up for monogamous relationships. Even married couples who are sworn till-death-do-us-part secretly make other choices outside of marriage; risking the covenant of marriage -- while more and more folks are exercising choices, that may also include abstinence.

With procreation, comes intrinsic desires and duties to care for our kids in a nurturing environment, hence we live in a kind of tunnel -- tunnel vision of sorts where life’s meaning does not change. We are expected to keep repeating the same cycle of life for eternity.

We enter the cycle of birth; eat, sleep, laugh, cry, love, defecate, grow, seek safety & security, education at varying levels, opportunities in society, work that is mutually satisfying if we are fortunate, or work day in and day out at something that remains meaningless, except for the fact of earning a living wage, also seeking love and marriage. Nothing new here, then the rule of procreation continues and we bear the burden of supporting family, because not to do so is inhumane and of course this is our innate responsibility. Once our children become independent, we move into the grand-parenting stage (if that’s you), retirement (the forgotten stage); where you begin to loose family and community respect. Despite, doing everything society and the human experience expects of you, as you age North American society have a variety of diseases attributed for the aging process; none of which says life is healthy and prosperous!

On November, 25-and-26, 2018, General Motors (GM) informed governments, media representative and the union for GM Canada workers; Unifor of their intention to close in 2019. The pending closure of 5 GM plants, one plant located in Canada and 4 plants in the U.S.; were announced to front-line workers on November 26, 2018.

The striking concern here is that a grand total of 14,700+ jobs will be affected! How will these individuals meet their societal obligations? What happens to new parents, new home owners, partners setting up their goals to correspond with societal teachings, what about aging workers who has served their company for many years and cannot undergo re-training, how will these folks pay for activities of daily living? Where does their living wage go? This creates more stress in regards to everyday living situation, couples breaking up, because their partner becomes a liability, rather than an asset. This is where the love part of the equation, and forever gets lost in the struggle for survival.
